Fintech Brief — July 10, 2026 NPCI Approves Agentic AI Payment Protocol — Machines Can Now Pay via UPI India’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has approved the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP), a new standard that will allow AI agents to initiate and complete UPI payments autonomously, without human intervention at each step. This makes India one of the first countries to build national-level infrastructure for agentic payments. Under the proposed framework, an AI agent could search for a product, compare prices, select the best deal, and execute the UPI payment on the user’s behalf — all without requiring a PIN or OTP for every transaction.
