Fintech Brief โ August 18, 2026 RBI Proposes Harmonised Interest Rate Framework: Quarterly Resets, Borrower Consent Mandatory The Reserve Bank of India has released draft directions that would require banks and NBFCs to reset floating-rate loan benchmarks at least once every three months โ a significant compression from the current cycle where borrowers can wait years for rate adjustments to reflect policy changes. The proposed RBI (Interest Rates on Loans and Advances) Directions, 2026, slated to take effect from April 1, 2027, would also mandate borrower consent before any benchmark switch and prohibit changes that disadvantage the borrower. A one-time migration of existing loans to the new framework by April 1, 2029 is proposed, with explicit safeguards: no rate increase at the point of migration and no migration charges. ...
