Centre constitutes a banking reform super-committee — with the RBI at the table

The Finance Ministry has constituted the High Level Committee on Banking for Viksit Bharat, a panel charged with recommending structural, institutional, regulatory and legislative reforms to make Indian banks more globally competitive, financially inclusive and resilient. It will be chaired by former Central Vigilance Commissioner Suresh N. Patel (earlier MD & CEO of Andhra Bank), and its named members include sitting RBI Deputy Governor Shirish Chandra Murmu, former Indian Bank MD & CEO Padmaja Chunduru, and former RBI Deputy Governor N. S. Vishwanathan — with the Joint Secretary (Banking) in DFS as member secretary. First announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2026-27, the committee has six months, until April 2027, to report. Rediff · Nation Path India

Why it matters: a former RBI Deputy Governor and a serving Deputy Governor reviewing the regulatory framework together is a notable configuration — this is the closest look at banking regulation’s own architecture since the post-NPA reform era, and anything it recommends on governance, consolidation or the RBI’s supervisory toolkit will eventually reach depositors and borrowers as product and pricing changes.

RBI demands proof of cybersecurity compliance after a run of hacks

The Reserve Bank has stepped up scrutiny of banks’ cybersecurity preparedness, asking lenders to demonstrate compliance with existing security requirements, investigate vulnerabilities in APIs connecting banks with NBFCs and fintech partners, and explain their readiness for AI-related threats — following incidents including a suspected data exposure of about 3,900 customers at State Bank of India and unauthorised transfers at other major lenders. An October 19 RBI advisory went further, asking regulated entities to treat their technology environments as compromised until forensically cleared. CERT-In has meanwhile offered training to officials from numerous financial institutions. Economic Times/Reuters · ETBFSI · The 420

Consumer takeaway: the bank–fintech API layer is where your KYC and account data actually lives; if you use a lending or payments app, the questions RBI is now asking your bank are about your data. After a breach, you’re entitled to prompt notification and remediation — and this week’s Supreme Court push means banks that fail basic due diligence are moving toward strict liability for fraud losses.

PB Fintech’s Q2 profit jumps 43% — under an IRDAI commission-reform cloud

PB Fintech (Policybazaar/Paisabazaar) reported Q2 FY27 consolidated net profit of ₹192.5 crore, up 42.7% from ₹134.9 crore a year ago, on revenue of ₹2,178 crore, up 35%. Total insurance premium facilitated grew 38% to ₹9,385 crore, core renewal-and-trail revenue rose 42% to ₹1,097 crore on a 12-month rolling basis, and Paisabazaar disbursals have now grown sequentially for five straight quarters. The catch: management is bracing for the regulator’s proposed insurance commission reforms, which could touch more than a third of revenue — Policybazaar plans to respond by tightening cost control and growing non-insurance revenue. Economic Times Consumer takeaway: commission caps are meant to lower distribution costs baked into your premium — but watch that savings don’t come out of advice quality instead.
