PhonePe rebrands Indus Appstore into a digital goods marketplace

PhonePe rebranded its homegrown app marketplace Indus Appstore as PhonePe Appstore on October 28, announcing that the platform has crossed 200 million (20+ crore) devices through OEM partnerships, with Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka and Telangana its top five states. The bigger shift is strategic: beyond app discovery — its catalogue now runs from ChatGPT and Duolingo to Sony LIV and Honor of Kings — the platform is becoming a marketplace for digital goods, selling gift cards and top-ups across shopping, travel, gaming, health and lifestyle, with in-game currency top-ups rolling out first. A new webstore, phonepeappstore.com, works from any browser without an app install. Chief business officer Priya Narasimhan pitched it as developers unlocking “new ways to earn — including ads, gift cards, and top-ups.” PhonePe press release · Moneycontrol · Business Today

This is the second rebrand in as many weeks — Share.Market became PhonePe Invest a fortnight ago — and reads like an IPO-bound company assembling non-UPI revenue lines before public-market scrutiny. For consumers, the watchpoint is that an appstore tied to a payments giant is also a distribution funnel for PhonePe’s own financial products; convenient, but worth remembering whose shelf you’re shopping on.

The ₹33,600-crore fintech IPO queue meets MDR maths

India’s fintech IPO pipeline holds at least ₹30,600 crore, potentially ₹33,600 crore, of planned issues across PhonePe, Razorpay, Navi, InCred Holdings, Fibe, InsuranceDekho and Upstox, per Tracxn data (KreditBee and PayU India are excluded — plans unconfirmed or on hold). MDR uncertainty and volatile markets are pushing companies to rethink listing timelines and valuations. Airpay founder Kunal Jhunjhunwala put it plainly: “Public market investors value predictability… For payments companies, MDR sits at the centre of that view,” noting firms will need a few quarters of data under the new 0.4% framework before pitching a credible outlook. All In Capital’s Kushal Bhagia added that global rate expectations and tech-stock appetite will shape timing as much as regulation. One deal has cleared: Fibe (Social Worth Technologies) has SEBI’s final observations for a ₹750-crore fresh issue plus an offer for sale of about 4.01 crore shares, with proceeds shoring up its lending arm. Consumer takeaway: the fee structure on your “free” UPI payments is now a valuation variable for every big payments IPO — delayed listings also mean delayed exits for the VCs who funded these apps.

The Bharat Web3 Association launched an independent self-regulatory body (SRB) for the virtual digital asset sector on October 28, chaired by Rohit Kumar Singh, a retired IAS officer and former secretary to the Government of India. It will issue voluntary market-integrity standards and strengthen AML/CFT compliance among member platforms. The backdrop: Parliament’s standing committee, in its 36th report on the proposed Securities Markets Code, 2025, had asked for clearer VDA definitions across securities, derivatives and other categories. BWA chairperson Dilip Chenoy framed the SRB as risk mitigation; Singh said industry success “will depend not merely on technological advancement, but on the trust it earns from consumers and society.” Moneycontrol

Consumer takeaway: self-regulation is not regulation. The SRB has no statutory powers and membership is voluntary — treat it as a floor, not protection. India still has no dedicated crypto law, and the 30% tax plus 1% TDS applies regardless of what an exchange promises.

NPCI signs IIIT Hyderabad to harden payments cybersecurity

Shukla. NPCI MD & CEO Dilip Asbe said securing the rails “requires continuous innovation, trained professionals and preparedness for evolving cyber threats.” Times of India · Deccan Chronicle

  • SEBI: Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey, speaking at the Business Standard BFSI Insight Summit and NDTV Profit IGNITE, said the regulator is exploring an India-built, domestically governed AI model for market supervision (implementing the IOSCO AI supervisory toolkit), will issue a consultation paper on easing FPI compliance, and — of most direct benefit to investors — direct plans become the default on AMC digital platforms from November 1, with regular-plan buyers to be told of the higher expense ratio.
