Today’s Top Stories

  • PhonePe has folded Share.Market into PhonePe Invest and launched a portfolio-analysis and optimisation tool aimed at bringing ordinary savers into equities.
  • Super.money more than tripled FY26 operating revenue to ₹292.4 crore, but its net loss widened 78% to ₹263.8 crore as promotion spending surged.
  • The previously announced UPI MDR deferral remains unresolved: NPCI has not set a new start date for eligible merchant payments.

1. PhonePe moves its investing product under the main brand

PhonePe rebranded Share.Market as PhonePe Invest on October 19, bringing the stock-broking platform into its wider payments and financial-services ecosystem. The launch includes Portfolio Optimiser, which combines portfolio building, analysis and suggested rebalancing. Its analyser presents research-backed “hold”, “monitor” or “sell” signals, while the optimiser can propose diversification changes for users to implement. PhonePe says existing users keep their holdings, account continuity and current charges. Moneycontrol’s report quotes founder Rahul Chari describing the product as a bridge for savers who may be moving from gold, deposits or mutual funds toward equities.

The product’s language matters. “Hold”, “monitor” and “sell” are not just a prettier portfolio view; users may reasonably read them as recommendations, especially when an app offers a one-click route to act. PhonePe should make clear how the signals are generated, what they do not account for, and whether they are general research or advice tailored to an individual. The company also said it is exploring a portfolio chatbot and ways to let users discuss holdings through external AI interfaces; those are prospective capabilities, not features to assume are already live. The brand expansion could lower the friction of investing, but the same distribution reach makes suitability, conflicts and plain-language risk disclosures more important. BusinessLine’s launch coverage reports that existing users retain their demat holdings, balances, watchlists, history and credentials.

2. Super.money grows fast—and spends faster

Flipkart-owned Super.money reported FY26 operating revenue of ₹292.4 crore, more than three times the previous year, while its net loss widened 78% to ₹263.8 crore. Total income reached ₹293.3 crore, against expenses of ₹557.1 crore, according to filings cited by The Economic Times. The report attributes the loss growth in part to business-promotion spending rising more than threefold. Super.money has become one of India’s larger UPI apps and is using payments to acquire customers before monetising through credit and commerce.

That is a useful test of the “free payments as a funnel” model: transaction scale is not the same as sustainable earnings. The figures show meaningful revenue growth, but also a large gap between income and expenses and heavy reliance on continued customer acquisition. Consumers should watch whether credit offers become more prominent as the app seeks returns, and whether pricing, eligibility and repayment obligations remain clear at the point of offer. The filing is an operating update, not a financing round; no new funding amount or valuation was reported in this story.

Policy, regulator and funding watch

UPI MDR — pending, not a new announcement today. NPCI had deferred the planned October 15 start of a 0.4% merchant discount rate on eligible person-to-merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000 until after Diwali; it said the revised date would be notified separately. As of this brief, no new date has surfaced. The delay is a material uncertainty for merchants and payment providers, but the deferral itself was announced earlier in October, not during this 24-hour window. ETtech’s coverage of the NPCI decision describes the proposed cap of ₹300 per transaction.

The scan of the RBI press-release index and SEBI’s news listing found no fintech-relevant RBI or SEBI circular in the window. We also found no newly reported Indian fintech funding round with a disclosed amount or valuation in the Inc42/Entrackr search. The latest Entrackr weekly funding report covers October 12–17, outside this cutoff; its $302.85 million across 28 startups is a whole-market total, not fintech funding alone.

Market watch: PhonePe and Super.money are private businesses, so these two company updates do not produce a direct listed-stock call. For merchants and payment users, the next concrete UPI signal is the date—and final operational detail—of any revised MDR implementation.
