1. Freecharge gets an RBI payment-aggregator nod

Axis Bank-owned Freecharge Payment Technologies has received in-principle RBI approval to operate in both online and physical payment-aggregator categories, Axis said in its Q2 FY27 investor presentation, according to The Economic Times’ October 17 report. The RBI’s Master Direction on Payment Aggregators sets the framework for these merchant-payment intermediaries, including controls around handling merchant funds.

The news arrives alongside Axis Bank’s expansion in payments: it reported 34% year-on-year growth in UPI transaction value for July–September and about 38% share by volume in the UPI payer-PSP segment. Those are Axis-specific figures, not UPI-wide growth. The bank also said digital transactions accounted for 98% of its individual customers’ financial transactions in the quarter.

The approval is a regulatory step, not an announced launch date, customer fee, or change to UPI rules. “In-principle” matters: the report does not describe it as an unconditional final authorisation. For merchants, the practical questions are what services Freecharge will offer and how settlement, refunds and support work; Axis has not announced those details in the cited report.

2. Jio Financial’s profit falls as lending expands and payments slow

Jio Financial Services’ September-quarter results show different trajectories across its businesses. In ETBFSI’s October 17 results analysis, consolidated profit after tax fell 51% year on year to about ₹340 crore, while operating expenses rose 91% to ₹550 crore. Net interest income, however, climbed 165% to ₹680 crore. The comparison is affected by dividend income in the year-earlier quarter; excluding that, the report says profit before tax grew 51% to ₹490 crore.

The lending arm, Jio Credit, reported assets under management of roughly ₹37,300 crore, up 22% sequentially, and disbursements of ₹13,100 crore, up 98% year on year. By contrast, Jio Payment Solutions processed ₹14,700 crore, down 24% from the previous quarter. Its net processing margin improved from 12 to 14 basis points as it focused on merchant and product mix, according to the report.

The headline profit decline alone misses this internal split: credit is scaling rapidly, while payments processed less value quarter-on-quarter but earned a slightly wider margin. Neither metric by itself establishes whether that payments contraction is temporary or a longer-term trend.

3. Funding rebounds, but the fintech signal is a planned fund—not a priced round

Entrackr’s weekly funding report, published October 17, counted $302.85 million raised by 28 Indian startups during October 12–17, versus $113.35 million the previous week. Eight were growth-stage deals, 21 early-stage and one undisclosed. E-commerce, AI and manufacturing led the sector counts; this was a whole-startup-market total, not a fintech-only funding figure.

The fintech-specific capital signal was CoinSwitch Ventures’ rebrand as BlackLane Capital. The independent early-stage investor says it will expand beyond Web3 into fintech and other sectors, invest up to $5 million per startup, and facilitate more than $100 million over five years. That is a forward-looking deployment plan—not $100 million already raised or invested—and no new portfolio-company valuation was reported. The roundup did not identify a newly announced fintech equity round with a disclosed valuation in this window.

Regulatory watch: I found no new RBI or SEBI circular, or NPCI-wide UPI rule announcement, in the 24-hour cut-off. The UPI MDR rollout delay beyond Diwali was reported earlier this week; NPCI’s replacement date remains unannounced, so it is not a fresh development in today’s window.
