Global Fintech Fest Opens Today — Agentic UPI Is the Main Event

Global Fintech Fest 2026 kicks off in Mumbai this morning (September 8–11, Jio World Centre) under the theme “Potential to Impact: Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance”, with agentic AI, tokenisation and quantum on the marquee (Economic Times). The announcement everyone is waiting for is NPCI’s Unified Agent Protocol — the framework reported by Reuters that would let AI agents execute small UPI payments without the user approving each transaction. NPCI has not formally confirmed the rollout, but the reporting is consistent: UAP composes two existing primitives — UPI Circle for delegated payment authority (already extended to software profiles) and Reserve Pay for blocked funds — into a standing, rule-based mandate with spending ceilings, identity checks and audit trails. Banks currently cap Reserve Pay blocks at ₹10,000 for up to 90 days; those limits are reported to be under revision for agentic use.

Also expected at the fest: interoperability for UPI AutoPay, letting users port existing mandates across UPI apps and letting merchants move mandates between payment providers (Inc42). That’s a genuinely consumer-positive change — today, switching your UPI app means re-setting every recurring mandate from scratch, which is exactly the kind of lock-in that keeps users captive. The context is a rail at record scale: UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 lakh crore in August (Press Insider). The open question for the consumer: when an agent mispays, who bears the loss? NPCI is reportedly preparing a liability framework, but the allocation among user, agent, bank and merchant is undisclosed — watch for that detail before celebrating.

SEBI Extends Angel Funds’ Accredited-Investor Deadline to March 2027

SEBI has extended the deadline for angel funds registered on or before September 10, 2025 to comply with the accredited-investor mandate — now March 31, 2027, per its latest circular, granted after industry representations (Economic Times). Funds registered after that date must onboard only accredited investors; all other Chapter 8 provisions of the June 3, 2026 AIF Master Circular are unchanged. The extension is a two-year softening of a rule meant to restrict angel investing to investors who can demonstrably absorb the risk. For consumers, this cuts both ways: accreditation protects unsophisticated retail from high-risk startup bets, but every extension also delays the day the angel market becomes a cleaner, disclosure-heavier place. Meanwhile, SEBI’s revised ETF pricing rules — new base-price, band and close-out norms for equity, debt and commodity ETFs — came into force yesterday (September 7) after a week’s deferral, with the T-1 NAV transition due by April 1, 2027 (Mint); the fallback pricing for illiquid ETFs should stop retail investors from staring at nonsensical band limits on thinly traded funds.

PB Fintech’s PB Pay Starts Onboarding Merchants as an RBI-Licensed Aggregator

PB Fintech — the Policybazaar and Paisabazaar parent — has begun merchant onboarding on PB Pay, its payment aggregator platform, after receiving RBI’s Certificate of Authorisation in February 2026 (Whalesbook). The board approved a ₹20 crore capital injection into the subsidiary in July, and the company is explicit that this is a diversification play beyond insurance distribution and lending marketplace revenues (Sahi). The aggregator market is already crowded — Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU and a queue of RBI-licensed entrants — so PB Pay’s edge is presumably bundling payments with its insurance and lending funnel. The consumer note: PB Fintech’s FY26 sustainability report disclosed a ₹5 crore IRDAI penalty paid by a subsidiary, a reminder that mis-selling scrutiny is the reputational baggage this brand carries into payment flows.

Funding: BFSI Voice AI and Quick Commerce Get Fresh Capital

Voice AI startup Navana.ai raised ₹40 crore in a Series A led by Ronnie Screwvala, with Antler India, Sharad Sanghi, Sandeep Singhal and Paula Mariwala participating; the capital goes toward BFSI deployments and speech models spanning 12 Indian languages and 45 dialects, on top of the 100 million+ voice AI minutes it already handles (Economic Times). Banks automating customer calls in vernacular languages is a genuine access win — provided consent and disclosure keep pace. Quick food delivery platform Swish is raising ₹224.54 crore (~$24 million) in an extended Series B led by Bertelsmann India, its second raise this year after a $38 million round in March (YourStory). The weekend’s headline round — Pixxel’s $100 million Series C — was covered in yesterday’s brief.
