UPI Completes a Decade: From 1.78 Crore to 24,162 Crore Annual Transactions

The Unified Payments Interface, launched by NPCI on August 25, 2016, turns ten today — and the numbers are staggering. Annual transaction volume surged nearly 13,000-fold, from 1.78 crore in FY 2016-17 to 24,162 crore in FY 2025-26. Transaction value hit ₹314 lakh crore in the same period, while monthly volumes touched a record 2,366 crore in July 2026.

A PIB backgrounder released ahead of the anniversary highlights that 741 banks are now live on the UPI network. Peer-to-merchant (P2M) transactions are heavily skewed toward small-ticket payments — 86% are below ₹500 — underscoring UPI’s deep integration into everyday retail. The platform now operates across 11 countries, with Greece and the Maldives as the latest adoptees. UPI accounts for nearly 49% of global real-time payment transactions by volume.

The finance ministry signalled that the next decade will focus on expanding merchant acceptance and deepening financial inclusion through continued policy support and technological advancement.
