UPI Transaction Fees Expected Within Two Weeks

The government is preparing to announce a 0.3% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI transactions of ₹2,000 and above, with an official notification expected within two weeks. The move follows the passage of legislation earlier this month that laid the legal groundwork for ending India’s zero-MDR regime for merchant payments — while keeping peer-to-peer transactions free.

Industry experts have pushed back, arguing that zero MDR for small merchants and low-value payments must be retained to protect UPI’s financial inclusion gains. UPI processed a record 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore in July 2026, according to NPCI data, making it the backbone of India’s digital payments ecosystem. The challenge now: designing a tiered MDR structure that recovers infrastructure costs without pricing small merchants out of digital payments.

Sachin Bansal-founded fintech Navi has secured $100 million from Dutch technology investor Prosus at a valuation of $1.3 billion — marking the company’s first institutional capital raise. The investment is subject to regulatory approvals, including clearance from the Competition Commission of India.

The round comes as Navi prepares for a potential IPO targeting $2 billion in valuation and up to $315 million in proceeds. Navi has been building a full-stack financial services play: its UPI app was India’s fourth-largest by volume in July (holding ~4% market share), its lending arm Navi Finserv crossed ₹13,000 crore in assets under management in FY26, and it reported consolidated profitability in Q4 FY26. Prosus, which already backs PayU in India, is placing a pre-IPO bet on a profitable fintech platform — a notable shift from the growth-at-all-costs era.
