RBI Overhauls Deposit Interest Rate Framework; New Norms From October 1
The Reserve Bank of India has issued the (Commercial Banks — Interest Rate on Deposits) Second Amendment Directions, 2026, significantly revising how banks price fixed deposits. The new rules take effect October 1, 2026.
Key changes:
- Uniform rates across all branches: Banks can no longer offer different rates for the same deposit product at different branches. All customers depositing the same amount on the same date get the same rate, regardless of branch location.
- Differential pricing on bulk deposits allowed: Banks can now offer varying rates on bulk deposits based on liquidity risk under the LCR (Liquidity Coverage Ratio) framework — a nod to the fact that large deposits behave differently during stress.
- Mandatory daily disclosure: Bulk deposit rates must be published on bank websites by 10:00 AM every business day (10:10 AM max grace period). No more opacity on what banks pay for wholesale funding.
- Applies to all bank categories: Commercial banks, small finance banks, regional rural banks, payment banks, local area banks, and urban cooperative banks all fall under the framework.
The RBI explicitly stated these changes do not prescribe any increase or reduction in FD rates — that remains market-driven. But the transparency mandate means depositors can finally compare what their bank offers versus peers in real time.
This matters because bulk deposit pricing has historically been a black box, with negotiated rates varying wildly between branches and relationship managers. Standardising disclosure is a consumer win.

India–Maldives Launch Favara-UPI Cross-Border Payment Corridor
India’s UPI went global again — this time to the Maldives. The cross-border payment corridor between Maldives’ instant payment system Favara and UPI went live on July 30, 2026.
Maldivian users can now transfer funds instantly to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India using their mobile banking apps. The corridor was developed jointly by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), RBI, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), and participating banks from both countries.
This builds on the NIPL–MMA agreement signed in July 2025 and continues UPI’s international expansion trajectory, which already includes linkages with Singapore, UAE, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, France, and others.
For consumers, this means Indian tourists and workers in the Maldives can send money home instantly via UPI, and Maldivian businesses can pay Indian suppliers in real time.

UPI Hits Record ₹29.88 Lakh Crore in July; Volume Crosses 23.6 Billion
NPCI data confirms UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore in July 2026 — both all-time highs. Transaction value rose 19% year-on-year from ₹25.08 lakh crore in July 2025.
The volume represents a sequential jump from 22.72 billion transactions in June, indicating sustained growth even during monsoon season. The system now handles roughly 760 million transactions daily.
However, the looming question remains: the government’s stance on MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) charges for large UPI transactions. If implemented, it could shift the cost burden onto merchants and potentially slow adoption at higher-value merchant segments.

RBI MPC Meeting This Week; Rate Cut Unlikely
The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee meets August 3–5, with the decision due on Wednesday. The repo rate currently sits at 5.25% — unchanged since a 25 bps cut in December 2025.
A Reuters poll of 72 economists shows 68 expect the RBI to hold steady. While consumer inflation has ticked up, core inflation remains near 4% — within the RBI’s comfort zone. Global peers are pivoting to rate hikes, but India’s central bank is expected to maintain its accommodative stance through 2026.
For borrowers, this means no immediate relief on EMIs. Existing floating-rate loan customers continue at current rates.
