Kotak & Axis Bank Deliver Strong Q1; HDFC Grows a Modest 5%
India’s private sector banks reported Q1 FY27 earnings on Saturday. Kotak Mahindra Bank posted a 26% year-on-year jump in standalone net profit to ₹4,123 crore, driven by 9% growth in net interest income (NII) to ₹7,928 crore and lower credit costs. 1 Gross NPA ratio improved to 1.18% from 1.48% a year ago.
Axis Bank reported a 23% rise in net profit to ₹7,114 crore, with NII growing 8% to ₹14,646 crore. Advances grew 19% YoY to ₹12.62 lakh crore. 2
HDFC Bank, the sector heavyweight, saw a more modest 5% increase in standalone net profit to ₹19,060 crore. ICICI Bank grew profit 16% to ₹14,805 crore with 12.7% NII growth. YES Bank was the standout gainer with a 34% profit jump.
The banking sector’s asset quality continues to improve across the board, even as net interest margins face pressure from elevated deposit costs. Kotak’s operating profit rose 10% to ₹6,131 crore, suggesting underlying resilience.
Emergent Becomes India’s Second AI Unicorn in a Month
Bengaluru-based Emergent, an AI “vibe coding” platform, raised $130 million in a Series C round at a $1.5 billion valuation, joining India’s unicorn club just a year after its public launch. The round was co-led by Creaegis. 3
The company’s valuation has quintupled in six months — from $300 million at its Series B (led by Khosla Ventures and SoftBank Vision Fund 2) in January 2026. Emergent’s total disclosed funding now stands at approximately $253 million. The platform has 200,000+ paying customers building over 12 million apps across 190 countries, with an annual revenue run rate of $120 million (up 70% in four months).
Emergent follows Sarvam AI, which crossed unicorn status in June 2026 with a $234 million raise. India’s unicorn count now stands at 131, with AI startups becoming the fastest-growing sub-category. The speed of Emergent’s rise — from launch to unicorn in roughly a year — mirrors the global froth in AI application-layer startups, even as questions persist about long-term defensibility.
Skyroot’s Vikram-1 Becomes India’s First Private Orbital Rocket
In a landmark moment for India’s space-tech ecosystem, Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1 from Sriharikota on July 18, making it India’s first privately built rocket to reach orbit. 4 India becomes only the third country — after the US and China — with an orbital-capable private launch vehicle.
The four-stage rocket carried customer payloads and in-orbit experiments on its “Mission Aagaman” maiden flight. PM Modi personally congratulated the team. Skyroot, valued at approximately $1.1 billion and backed by Temasek and GIC, is India’s most-funded space startup.
The launch is a proof point for India’s 2020 space-sector liberalisation and the IN-SPACe regulatory framework. Skyroot plans to scale to quarterly launches by end of 2026 and monthly launches by 2027. The government aims to grow India’s share of the global space economy from ~$8 billion to $44 billion by 2033. For India’s fintech and DPI story, this matters: lower satellite costs could accelerate DePIN networks and improve data infrastructure for real-time payment systems in underserved areas.
SBI Funds Management IPO Set to List at 17% Premium
The SBI Funds Management IPO — India’s largest public offering this year at ₹9,813 crore (~$1 billion) — is set to list on July 21 on NSE and BSE. The issue was oversubscribed 41.7x overall, drawing bids worth ₹2.97 trillion ($30.7 billion). 5 The grey market premium stands at ~₹97 per share, indicating a ~17% listing gain over the upper price band of ₹574.
The SBI-Amundi JV is India’s largest asset manager with ₹12.5 trillion in AUM. The strong institutional response is being read as a bellwether for India’s $50 billion IPO pipeline this year, which includes the much-anticipated NSE and Jio Platforms listings.
