Rupee Slips to One-Month Low as Gulf Tensions Reshape FX Risk
The Indian rupee weakened to its lowest level in over a month on Monday as renewed US-Iran hostilities and Iran’s claimed closure of the Strait of Hormuz sent Brent crude above $79 per barrel. Oil’s resurgence is a direct hit to India’s current account—the country imports over 80% of its crude requirements. 1
A key options market gauge, the 1-month 25-delta dollar-rupee risk reversal, drifted to 0.3 from near-zero at the start of July, signalling traders are pricing in further depreciation. “The rupee’s sensitivity to headlines will likely remain elevated in the near future and demand a more assertive market presence by the Reserve Bank of India to limit sharp moves,” a state-run bank trader told Reuters. 2
India’s June CPI data, expected to show inflation climbing above the RBI’s 4% medium-term target for the first time in 16 months, adds a policy tightening dimension. For fintechs and payment processors, a weaker rupee raises import costs for hardware and cloud infrastructure while simultaneously pressuring consumer discretionary spend—both headwinds to watch in Q2 earnings season. 3
Airtel Money Gets RBI Nod as NBFC, Telecom Giant Doubles Down on Fintech
Airtel Money has received RBI approval to operate as a non-deposit-taking non-banking financial company (NBFC), cementing Bharti Airtel’s push into financial services alongside telecom and data centres. Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal identified finance, cloud, and data centres as the three pillars driving Airtel’s next growth phase at over ₹3.3 lakh crore in revenue. 4
The NBFC licence positions Airtel Money to expand beyond basic payments into lending, insurance distribution, and wealth management—areas where its 400-million-strong telecom subscriber base gives it a massive distribution advantage. Airtel has already raised $1 billion from investors for its financial services ambitions.
This is significant for India’s fintech landscape: telecom-to-financial services convergence is accelerating globally, and Airtel joins Jio Financial Services as a deep-pocketed player blurring the line between telco and bank. For pure-play fintechs, this raises the competitive bar, especially in semi-urban and rural markets where Airtel’s physical distribution network is unmatched.
Tata Capital Buys Into Gold Loan Frenzy with ₹708 Crore Acquisition
Tata Capital has acquired an established gold loan business with a ₹708 crore loan book, 162 branches, and 32,000 customers, entering India’s fastest-growing secured lending segment. 5
The move comes against the backdrop of explosive growth in gold lending by NBFCs—outstanding gold loans jumped nearly 70% year-on-year to ₹3.29 lakh crore by May 2026. With gold prices hovering near all-time highs and household gold holdings estimated at over 25,000 tonnes in India, gold loans have become a critical credit avenue for small borrowers underserved by traditional banks.
Tata Capital’s entry intensifies competition against incumbents like Muthoot Finance and Manappuram, but its brand and capital base could accelerate formalisation in a segment still dominated by informal lenders in Tier-3 and Tier-4 towns.
UPI Completes 10 Years: From 2 Crore to 24,000 Crore Annual Transactions
UPI completed a decade of operations, clocking ₹314 lakh crore in transaction value during FY26—a more than 4,000-fold increase from the ₹0.07 lakh crore processed in its debut year (FY 2016-17). Annual volumes surged from just 2 crore transactions to over 24,162 crore, representing an almost 12,000-fold jump. 6
As of 2024, UPI accounts for nearly 49% of the world’s real-time payment transaction volume, a milestone recognised by the IMF. Monthly volumes crossed 2,000 crore transactions for the first time in August 2025, and the daily average now runs at approximately 60 crore transactions. The number of banks live on UPI grew from 44 to 703 over the decade.
While growth in value terms has moderated to 18.5% in FY26 (down from 30% in FY25), the platform’s sheer scale means incremental gains still represent billions in monthly transaction value. Credit-on-UPI remains the next growth frontier, pending final RBI guidelines.
