This week in Indian fintech infrastructure was dominated by a single question: what happens when AI agents need to pay? Pine Labs answered with P3P, an agentic payment protocol layered on UPI that eliminates the human authentication step entirely. Meanwhile, UPI continued its global march — live at the Eiffel Tower now, rolling into Paris and Nice airports — and the long-awaited market cap deadline that will reshape UPI app competition ticked closer as PhonePe and Google Pay’s combined share finally dropped below 80%. On the enterprise infrastructure side, Quickwork shipped a fully self-managed deployment model, and Razorpay signalled a $600M IPO. Here are the five stories developers and architects should track.
1. Pine Labs Launches P3P — India’s First Autonomous Agentic Payment Protocol on UPI

Pine Labs officially launched the Pine Labs Payment Protocol (P3P), the country’s first autonomous agentic payment protocol built directly on top of UPI. Unlike conventional UPI transactions that require a human user to enter an MPIN or approve via biometric authentication, P3P enables AI agents to browse, negotiate, decide, and execute payments autonomously — no PIN, no OTP, no human tap at checkout.
How it works technically: P3P extends UPI’s existing mandate infrastructure — specifically Single Block Multiple Debit (SBMD) and One Time Mandate (OTM) frameworks. These NPCI mechanisms allow funds to be blocked in advance and debited on a triggering event with near-instant settlement. Pine Labs frames these pre-existing mandate rails as infrastructure already suited to agentic commerce, since the “approval” is pre-authorised rather than real-time. Grantex provides the identity verification layer controlling which agents are permitted to act on behalf of users.
First adopter: Gullak, the digital gold savings platform, is live on P3P for autonomous recurring gold purchases. This is a textbook use case — an agent monitors gold prices, decides when to buy, and executes the payment without waking the user.
Why this matters for developers: P3P is not just a product launch; it’s a protocol. Pine Labs is positioning it as an open layer that other fintechs can integrate. The question for the developer community is whether P3P becomes a de facto standard for machine-initiated payments on UPI, or whether NPCI builds something similar natively. UPI processed over 23.2 billion transactions worth Rs 29.9 trillion in May 2026 — the addressable market for agent-initiated payments is enormous. The architectural choice of piggybacking on mandates rather than building new authentication rails is clever but raises questions about flexibility for use cases that don’t fit the recurring/payment-on-event model.
2. UPI Goes Live at the Eiffel Tower; Rollout Planned for Paris and Nice Airports

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed on June 14 that UPI is now accepted at the Eiffel Tower in Paris — the first French merchant to adopt it. Rollout is planned for Paris Charles de Gaulle and Nice Côte d’Azur airports in the coming weeks. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal also launched UPI payments at Galeries Lafayette in Nice on June 16.
Technical infrastructure: The France expansion runs through the NIPL-Lyra partnership inked in February 2024. NIPL (NPCI International Payments Limited) partnered with Lyra, a French e-commerce and payments company, to introduce UPI in France. The formal launch happened at India’s Republic Day reception in Paris. France is the first European country to accept UPI payments.
This matters technically because it validates the NPCI approach of building internationalisation through bilateral partnerships with local acquirers and payment processors rather than through network-to-network links (like SWIFT or Visa/Mastercard cross-border). The UPI QR code standard is exported alongside the payment rails, and Indian tourists can use their existing UPI apps without any modification. For developers working on cross-border payment products, the UPI-Lyra integration provides a reference architecture for how DPI exports work in practice: local acquirer handles merchant onboarding and settlement, while UPI handles the customer-side authentication and routing.
Scale context: UPI recorded 23.2 billion transactions worth Rs 29.9 trillion in May 2026 (737.79 million daily average). The infrastructure has proven it can handle domestic scale — the question is whether the international partnerships can scale the merchant network fast enough to make UPI abroad useful for more than tourist photo-ops.
3. PhonePe-Google Pay Combined Market Share Drops Below 80% — Market Cap Deadline Looms

For the first time since NPCI began releasing app-specific transaction data, the combined market share of PhonePe and Google Pay has dipped below 80%. According to NPCI data for May 2026: PhonePe holds 46.2% and Google Pay 32.7%, with Paytm at 7.9%, Navi at 3.6%, and a long tail of smaller apps making up the remainder.
Only six months remain before the deadline for implementing NPCI’s 30% market cap rule for a single UPI app. This rule, designed to prevent excessive concentration of payment volume in a single application, will force PhonePe — currently at 46.2% — to shed a significant portion of its transaction volume to third-party apps. Google Pay is within the cap but uncomfortably close.
Technical implications: The market cap is not just a competition policy — it has direct engineering consequences. Apps that currently route all UPI transactions through a single PSP (Payment Service Provider) will need to diversify their backend integration. Payment aggregators like Razorpay, Cashfree, and PayU that offer multi-PSP routing are well-positioned. For developers building on UPI, this means transaction routing, load balancing, and failover across multiple PSPs will become a first-class concern rather than a nice-to-have. Expect API demand for intelligent UPI routing services to surge in Q3–Q4 2026.
4. Quickwork Ships Fully Self-Managed Integration Infrastructure for the AI Era

Mumbai-based Quickwork Technologies announced a fully self-managed deployment model for its enterprise integration and automation platform. The new capabilities include on-premises, virtual private cloud (VPC), and air-gapped deployment options, enabling enterprises to run their entire integration, automation, and AI workflow infrastructure within their own controlled environments.
Quickwork calls this “Operational Sovereignty” — the ability to operate critical integration infrastructure entirely within an enterprise’s own environment with full control and reduced external dependencies. Dr. Milind R., the company’s leadership, emphasised that enterprises gain deployment flexibility, lower vendor dependency, greater security transparency, and support for regulatory requirements.
Why it matters for fintech developers: Indian fintech companies, especially those in lending, insurance, and payments, operate under RBI data localisation and governance requirements that increasingly favour self-hosted infrastructure. Quickwork’s move to offer air-gapped deployment is a direct response to these regulatory pressures. For development teams, it means integration workflows, API orchestration, and AI pipelines no longer need to route through a third-party SaaS — they can run entirely within the enterprise’s own VPC. This is particularly relevant as more Indian fintechs build agentic AI systems that process sensitive financial data; keeping that processing inside a controlled boundary is becoming a compliance necessity, not just a preference.
The no-code/low-code approach also matters: Quickwork has been visible at Money Expo India 2026, positioning itself for financial institutions that need integration infrastructure but may lack large engineering teams. The intersection of no-code tooling and air-gapped deployment is still relatively rare in the Indian market.
5. Razorpay Signals $600M IPO — Developer-Focused Payment Gateway Matures

Razorpay, India’s largest developer-focused payment gateway, is reportedly planning an initial public offering valued at approximately $600 million, targeted for late 2026. The company has been the go-to payment API provider for Indian startups and SMBs for years, processing billions in annual transaction volume.
Technical significance: Razorpay’s IPO is a milestone for India’s fintech infrastructure layer — the “picks and shovels” companies that power other fintechs. Unlike consumer-facing apps, Razorpay’s value proposition is deeply technical: a well-documented REST API, webhooks, SDKs for major platforms, and a sandbox environment that thousands of developers start with. The company also offers RazorpayX (banking-as-a-service for businesses), Razorpay Route (multi-bank routing for UPI), and Razorpay Switch (payment orchestration).
The IPO timing is strategic: with the UPI market cap deadline approaching and payment routing complexity increasing, Razorpay’s multi-PSP routing products are more valuable than ever. For the developer ecosystem, an IPO also signals maturation — it means more resources for product development, potentially more API capabilities, and greater institutional trust for enterprise clients. The broader trend: India’s API-first fintech infrastructure companies (Razorpay, Setu, Decentro, Cashfree) are transitioning from startup mode to regulated public entities, which changes how they build and ship APIs.
