The numbers alone are staggering, but what’s more interesting for developers and engineers is the architecture that makes this possible.
A viral explainer this week broke down how NPCI’s switch architecture relies on the Choreography-based Saga Pattern rather than traditional Two-Phase Commit (2PC) protocols. In a 2PC system, a coordinator must lock resources across all participating banks during a transaction — creating bottlenecks that would freeze payments during traffic spikes (think salary credits on the 1st, or festival-season merchant volumes). Instead, UPI uses a choreography approach where each service (remitter bank, beneficiary bank, NPCI switch) handles its local state independently, communicating through asynchronous events. If any step fails, compensating transactions are triggered to roll back changes — without a central coordinator.
NPCI’s switch routes data using V8 isolates (lightweight, sandboxed execution contexts from the V8 JavaScript engine) for high-concurrency processing, with distributed state management keeping each transaction’s lifecycle decoupled from others. The pilot positions India as a testing ground for AI-native commerce. Razorpay’s payment gateway APIs serve as the bridge between ChatGPT’s conversational interface and the UPI network. The integration likely uses Razorpay’s existing UPI Collect and UPI Intent APIs, with the AI agent constructing payment requests dynamically based on user intent parsed from natural language.
This is technically significant for several reasons. First, it demonstrates a new intent-to-payment pipeline where the traditional checkout flow (cart → payment method selection → authentication → confirmation) is replaced by a single conversational interaction. The AI agent must correctly identify payment intent, select the right merchant and amount, construct a valid Razorpay API request, and present the UPI payment confirmation — all without a visual UI. Beyond the governance implications, this has direct technical consequences for developers building on the AA framework.
The AA ecosystem now has over 1,120 regulated financial entities — 176 Financial Information Providers (FIPs), 1,020 Financial Information Users (FIUs), and 17 Account Aggregators. More than 450 million consent requests have been fulfilled, with 294 million linked accounts and 290 million monthly data shares across lending, insurance, wealth management, and personal finance use cases. These are not small numbers — this is production-grade infrastructure handling nearly 300 million data transfers per month.
As SRO, Sahamati will now develop operational and technical standards for the ecosystem, facilitate dispute resolution, support interoperability, and coordinate among participants. For developers, this means:

Chari emphasised that PhonePe is integrating AI across core operations: fraud detection, compliance monitoring, personalised financial services, and internal efficiency management. Crucially, he stressed the importance of laying solid technology foundations before applying AI at scale — implementing governance frameworks, data access controls, and monitoring tools to ensure responsible usage.
This “guardrails-before-growth” approach is technically significant. At PhonePe’s scale — the company processes a substantial portion of India’s UPI transactions — deploying AI models in production means dealing with real-time inference at massive throughput, maintaining model explainability for regulatory compliance, and building feedback loops that don’t amplify biases. Chari’s emphasis on governance suggests PhonePe is building AI infrastructure with production-grade reliability, not just proof-of-concept speed.

Ezee.ai will deploy three core systems: an AI-enabled Loan Origination System (LOS), a Business Rules Engine (BRE), and a Collections Management Platform. Notably, Ezee.ai’s platform is no-code — meaning Fino’s operations teams can configure lending workflows, credit policies, and collection strategies without writing code, while the AI handles underwriting, risk assessment, and decision-making.
This partnership is architecturally significant because it represents a shift from build-to-buy in banking technology. Rather than developing a proprietary lending platform (which would take 18-24 months), Fino is plugging in a pre-built AI stack that integrates with its existing payments infrastructure. Ezee.ai’s CEO Rajendra Awasthi positioned the platform as enabling “greater operational agility and scalability” — which in practice means faster go-to-market for new loan products, A/B testing of credit policies, and real-time risk model updates.
