Scapia Banks $63M Series C as Revolut’s $75B Shadow Looms Over India
Bengaluru-based travel-fintech startup Scapia has closed a $63 million Series C led by General Catalyst at a valuation exceeding $500 million — more than doubling its roughly $200 million valuation from just over a year ago. Existing investors Peak XV Partners and Z47 also participated in the all-equity round, bringing total funding to $135 million.
Founded in 2022 by former Flipkart executive Anil Goteti, Scapia has built a travel-first financial super-app combining flight and hotel bookings with co-branded credit cards issued through Federal Bank and Bank of Baroda. The company claims to be India’s first to launch a dual-network co-branded card spanning both Visa and RuPay, linked directly to UPI. The growth metrics are notable: flight bookings grew 5-6x over the past year, hotel bookings 8x, and each card is used 15-20 times monthly — a frequency that signals genuine daily utility rather than sign-up bonus gaming.
Operating revenue rose to approximately $3.5 million in FY25 from $2 million in FY24, while net losses narrowed slightly to ~$10 million from $10.6 million. A significant portion of the new capital will fund AI product development, engineering hiring, adding banking partners, and exploring lending through bank and NBFC partnerships.
The raise’s timing is significant. Revolut — Europe’s most valuable fintech at a $75 billion valuation — has invested over £40 million to localise its technology for India’s data sovereignty requirements, secured a PPI licence from RBI, integrated with UPI, and committed $670 million over five years to its India operation, targeting 20 million users by 2030. General Catalyst’s involvement is itself a signal: the firm has committed $5 billion to India over five years and is concentrating capital into fewer, larger bets.
“India’s next generation of consumer companies will be built around entirely new behaviours, not just digital versions of old ones,” said Neeraj Arora, General Catalyst’s India and MENA CEO.

Revolut Begins India Beta Rollout — Years of Architecture Work Finally Pays Off
British fintech giant Revolut has quietly begun rolling out services to thousands of Indian users as part of a controlled beta programme, marking a significant milestone in its years-long India entry strategy.
Revolut has built a waitlist of approximately 450,000 users in India since opening signups earlier this year. A localised beta app is now available on Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Beta users can access UPI payments, e-money wallets, domestic prepaid cards, multi-currency cards, virtual cards, and disposable cards. The company plans to add Lifestyle and RevPoints offerings before expanding the rollout.
The technical groundwork has been substantial. Revolut has been building its India business since 2021, hiring fintech executive Paroma Chatterjee to lead local operations, acquiring Arvog Forex in 2022 for regulatory presence, and securing a Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) licence from RBI. Over £40 million has been invested in localising the technology stack for India’s data sovereignty requirements. Notably, family/joint accounts won’t be offered in India as they require a full banking licence.
The company is targeting India’s digitally-native consumers aged 25-45, with a goal of 20 million users by 2030 and processing at least $7 billion in transactions. Revolut’s app has been downloaded nearly 820,000 times in India since becoming available, with more than a third occurring in 2025 and early 2026.
For developers, Revolut’s India entry represents a new integration opportunity. The platform’s API infrastructure — battle-tested across 40+ global markets — will eventually offer Indian fintechs programmable access to multi-currency exchange, card issuance, and cross-border payment rails through standardised RESTful APIs.
“This is being done in order to gather feedback on core product functioning and enhance the overall customer experience and the value proposition before opening up the platform for a larger audience,” a Revolut spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Sahamati Raises ₹50 Crore to Scale India’s Account Aggregator Ecosystem
Sahamati, the industry body and ecosystem builder for India’s Account Aggregator (AA) framework, has raised ₹50 crore (~$6 million) from over 30 financial institutions to accelerate the growth of what has become one of the world’s most ambitious open finance data-sharing infrastructures.
The Account Aggregator framework — live since 2021 — has now processed over 150 crore data-sharing consents, enabling citizens to instruct one financial entity to pull data from another with cryptographic proof of consent. Think of it as India’s answer to Open Banking, but built on consent-first architecture rather than regulatory mandates for data access.
For developers and fintechs, the AA framework provides standardised API access to financial data across banks, NBFCs, insurance companies, mutual funds, and pension providers — all with user consent managed through a consent manager. This eliminates the fragmented integrations that previously made building credit scoring, personal finance management, and lending products exceptionally complex.
The NITI Aayog DPI for 2047 roadmap, published in 2026, identifies AI-led financial inclusion as a top-three priority — and the AA framework is a foundational layer, providing the structured, consented financial data that makes AI-powered credit underwriting possible at population scale.
This funding signals that India’s major financial institutions are placing serious bets on the AA ecosystem as a core infrastructure layer, not just a regulatory checkbox.

UPI Posts Record Numbers as NPCI Pushes Developer-Friendly Upgrades
UPI continued its explosive trajectory in May 2026, processing a record 23.2 billion transactions worth ₹29.9 trillion (~$313.8 billion) — cementing its position handling nearly half of global real-time payment transaction volumes. For developers building on UPI, the week brought several significant technical developments.
NPCI’s new API usage rules for banks and PSPs, outlined in a circular dated May 21 with implementation from August 1, 2026, aim to standardise how third-party apps integrate with UPI infrastructure. The rules are designed to bring consistency to API access patterns, rate limits, and error handling across the ecosystem — a long-standing pain point for fintech developers juggling integrations with multiple PSPs.
Pre-transaction beneficiary name verification went live from June 1, 2026. UPI apps must now mandatorily pull the verified name of the payment recipient via a secure database and display the full official name before confirming the payment. This is a backend API-level change that every UPI-integrated app must implement — it adds a verification call to the payment initiation flow, requiring developers to handle the additional latency and fallback scenarios. NPCI has warned of penalties for non-compliance.
UPI Circle, a feature allowing users to access one bank account across multiple devices, addresses a persistent technical challenge — the SIM-linkage requirement that has prevented dual-phone users from making UPI payments from a secondary device. This represents a fundamental architectural shift in how UPI handles device identity and authentication.
At Mumbai Tech Week 2026 (May 26-28), NPCI showcased several developer-facing innovations including Conversational Payments (voice and chat-initiated UPI transactions), the BHIM AI Payments Suite with a secure sandbox for testing AI-driven payment flows, and UPI Live for automated recurring payments. NPCI’s MD & CEO Dilip Asbe articulated the need for a dedicated regulatory framework for AI in fintech, emphasising that governance standards are needed as AI adoption accelerates across payments, lending, fraud detection, and customer service.
The NPCI is also actively hiring senior product leadership to drive “innovation, platform evolution, and next-generation capability development across the UPI ecosystem” — a signal that the developer platform layer is about to receive significant investment.

The payment infrastructure platform is “doubling down on its investment in AI capabilities” and renewing expansion plans for the US market.
Primer’s technology enables merchants to connect to multiple payment processors, gateways, and methods through a single unified API. For Indian merchants processing cross-border transactions, Primer’s platform abstracts away the complexity of managing multiple payment relationships — a capability that becomes increasingly valuable as India’s e-commerce export market grows.
The raise underscores a broader trend: payment infrastructure is becoming AI-first. Companies that can offer intelligent routing, dynamic fraud detection, and automated reconciliation through API-driven platforms are commanding premium valuations. India’s own payment infrastructure players — Razorpay, Cashfree, and others — are likely feeling the competitive heat and will need to accelerate their own AI integration roadmaps.
